Speech – Prize-giving Ceremony – “My Way” The Painting Competition
“My Way” was Cuomo Foundation’s a first painting competition in India. It was held in July 2014 and was open to all the pupils, scholarship students and teachers attending schools in K.G. Kandigai, Kovalam and Sendivakkam supported by the Cuomo Foundation.
This speech was relayed via Video-Link during the prize-giving ceremony of the Painting Competition, held at Santhome Higher Sec. School, Chennai.
“Your Grace,
Your Excellency,
Dear Members of the Jury,
Dear Priests, Teachers and Students,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
And Dear Charles, Good afternoon.
I wish, first of all, to thank you for your interest in this new and promising event that we called. “My Way “.
Arts reflects Education but more importantly Civilization. Each Society, from as far as we know in mankind, has expressed its history, its feelings, its fears, its way of life, its traditions, through pictures, paintings, drawings, etc.
It all started with rock painting by cave men wherever, in Egypt, in Europe or elsewhere. Whether in the caves, or on clay pottery, bronze or stone, they witness lifestyle. They have an immense value not only historical but artistically. And each one is a milestone for any Society.
Any form of drawing or painting or carving, shows the trends and evolution of mankind. For centuries they represented reality but progressively allowed the artists to express their fantasies and then came abstraction.
Men did not only show what they saw, but gave the twist of their imagination, of their dreams, and famous paintings nowadays might even reflect only a concept and no longer what we see or imagine.
I cannot think that as we have now initiated this cultural process, that we would not pursue. Obviously, drawings and paintings require some techniques which can be taught. But also, as I alluded to, previously, some knowledge , of our history which does no longer , in an open world such as the one we live in, belong to one Country or one civilization , but is part of the huge patchwork of human beings from their origin up to now.
“My Way” opens widely the door of an unknown world to our students. We have to give them access to this knowledge, enhance their artistic capacities through lessons, Internet and exhibits. Some may be more gifted than others, but this should not prevent anyone to try at least.
The best will be awarded prices, but those who will complete a drawing will have achieved something unique which should allow them to know themselves better and become better humans.
Art is also part of Education and thus the Foundation will support other contests with your help and support.
I could not travel and be with you today, but be sure that my Heart is with you and that is “MY WAY” of expressing how important it is to me.

Lilly Kyu ou une longue amitié
Maria Elena Cuomo a rencontré Lilly Kyu à Rangoun en 1998 lors d’un voyage effectué au Myanmar. Après 17 ans, Lilly a enfin vu son rêve devenir réalité : elle a pu se rendre, cet hiver, au siège social de la Fondation Cuomo à Monaco. Dans cette lettre rédigée à l’issue de leur dernière rencontre au Vietnam, au printemps 2014, Maria Elena Cuomo évoque leur amitié née il y a quinze ans.
« Lilly Kyu : une amitié qui est née pratiquement au même moment que la Fondation, une amitié parsemée d’embûches dues à la distance, à l’absence de communication et à l’absence d’ouverture du Pays : le Myanmar. Un Pays que nous avons beaucoup aimé et parcouru presque entièrement.
Paysages fantastiques, lieux mystiques comme Golden Rock Kyaiktiyo, Yangon, Swedagon Pagoda, Kandawgyi Lake, Mount Popa, Inle Lake, Ngpali Beach, plages vierges et une population accueillante, souriante, jamais hostile malgré les difficultés et la pauvreté… De toutes ces richesses, nous en avons résumé quelques-unes dans un livre : « Land of Gold ».
Lilly Kyu, qui se livre difficilement est un esprit très ouvert, curieux de tout, que nous avons simplement aidé à éclore.
Une relation de 14 ans avec des interruptions mais toujours proche malgré tout.
On a beaucoup discuté des projets de la Fondation qui venait de naître, des projets dans son Pays qui s’ouvrait lentement : un rêve. Mais aujourd’hui ce rêve est devenu réalité.
Lilly Kyu fait partie d’une culture qui s’étend au-delà du Myanmar, dans des pays qui se développent comme le Cambodge, le Vietnam et auxquels la Fondation s’intéresse. Elle a eu de multiples expériences professionnelles dans le tourisme et dans la communication, au Cambodge, au Vietnam, au Myanmar. Nos intérêts sont devenus communs et notre souhait de pouvoir travailler ensemble peut enfin se concrétiser. »

Inauguration Speech – The New Training School, Phnom Penh
“Mesdames et Messieurs,
La Fondation Cuomo que je représente voit, dans l’inauguration du centre de complexe de Formation Happy Chandara, l’aboutissement d’un beau projet auquel nous sommes fiers et heureux d’avoir pu participer.
Parmi nos missions, l’Education est la plus importante : c’est ce qui nous a rapproché de “Toutes à l’école” pour la construction d’un bâtiment destiné à la formation professionnelle qui facilite la recherche d’un métier pour les élèves dans un futur proche.
« Toutes à l’école » permet à des jeunes filles cambodgiennes en situation précaire de sortir de leur condition en devenant instruites puis, en acquérant les connaissances et les compétences spécifiques à certains métiers : ce sont ces mêmes valeurs que défend et qui anime notre Fondation.
La formation professionnelle, quel que soit le niveau de développement d’une société, reste l’un des enjeux éducatifs les plus complexes car elle reflète les besoins de la société et du monde réel : celui du travail. C’est tout à l’honneur de “Toutes à l’Ecole ” et de sa Présidente de s’en occuper activement.
Nous tenons à féliciter tous ceux qui, par leur engagement et leur dévouement, ont permis à ce projet d’exister et, qui dans la continuité, le feront vivre.Nous sommes encore une fois très heureux que la Fondation Cuomo ait pu participer à ce beau projet et nous souhaitons tout le succès qu’il mérite pour l’avenir. ”
